Snow Club faces challenges but celebrates camaraderie and competition

Under the piercing sun of an autumn day, Aston Snow Club arrived at Swadlincote Ski Slopes brimming with hope and determination. The first of many “Kings” races was to be held in the theme of “Mobsters and Lobsters.” Universities from across the Midlands had bundled their members into vans and buses, each heading to the slopes. While most teams dressed in their finest mobster-inspired outfits, Aston Snow Club decided to add a twist, with a style representative of home! We had decided to create a team of “Birmingham’s finest” - dressed head to toe in black and finished off with balaclavas to complete the look. Our racers, and some spectators dressed, the team were ready to head onto the synthetic slopes and begin the competition.

Our Team, however, were struck with difficulties from the get go! Due to travel issues, our journey was plagued with confusion. With our racers bundled into a car to improve camaraderie, and some spectators into a minivan, others were left behind to travel via Uber. The Uber passed a car rather similar to the one all our racers had bundled into minutes prior, and a quick message was sent into the Group Chat:

“Are you lot stuck on the side of the road?”

“Yes.”

Our issues had started and with our racers stuck on the side of a road, a quick round trip to collect them was imperative! Once complete, we were one less racer down, as he had decided to “stay with his broken car”.  As other teams sped down the synthetic material our captain was forced to search for another member. Member acquired; our races started.

Round One consisted of Notts First team and Birmingham Seconds. Both were lost. Round Two was against Warwick, Keele and Birmingham again. The setbacks proved too difficult for us to overcome, as somehow, and too much confusion to our Race captain, we were the only team to not make it through to the knockouts.

Regardless of the outcome, twas a successful day. Aston can be proud and hold their heads up high. We put in a valiant effort and were put against some tough competition. Swadlincote showed vibrancy and rivalry within an inter-university competition. It was an amazing experience, akin to last years, and the freshers within snow took to it like a fish in water. Each one came back beaming, enjoying the day’s obstacles, sporting event and the socialising.
