For my family the biggest debate of the Christmas season isn’t the choice of dessert, the presents or even the decorations, it is the dreaded movie of choice. Of course, it’s next to impossible to please everyone in the family, which is why I've made a list of my favourite Christmas classics from the rom-coms to the nostalgics and everything in between, to help find that perfect movie for you.
For the Celebrity Element - Love Actually (2003)
My Mum’s favourite part of any movie is spotting the celebrities and their other works, so if celebrity spotting is a family sport then love actually is the ideal movie.
This movie is celebrity stacked from the heart-throb Colin Firth to Hugh Grant as Prime Minister this movie has the best of the best.
This movie tells 9 intertwined stories leading up to the season of Christmas with some of the funniest and most iconic scenes in movie history and is a must watch for this Christmas season.
For the Romantic Winter Vibes - The Holiday (2006)
Cameron Diaz as a main lead say less, The Holiday is the most picturesque Christmas movie, the concept revolves around two main characters who do a house swap from the Los Angeles Christmas to the British countryside creating the ultimate setup for a romcom.
The music in this movie is unmatched from George Michael to the works of Hans Zimmer and the wholesome romantic feeling throughout the whole movie. A must watch for the cozy winter season with a cup of hot chocolate.
The Laugh Out Loud moments - Home Alone 1 (1990) + 2 (1992)
Home Alone has to be mine and my brother’s favourite Christmas movie of all time, even though we’ve watched it every year since we were little, it never ceases to make us laugh.
The first movie follows Kevin being as the title suggests left at home and revolves around Kevin protecting his house from burglars through a set of pranks throughout his house. It shows the kid’s resourcefulness in the midst of chaos. The pranks level up each time keeping you on your toes and somehow feeling the pain through the screen.
The second movie follows Kevin in New York where he once again is left but this time in New York City with new characters and recurring burglars after their escape from prison. With the city that embodies Christmas and Kevin back to antics from the first movie, it’s the perfect movie duo for those who laugh until it hurts moments.
For the Childhood Throwback – Nativity! 1 (2009) + 2 (2012)
For the Primary School throwback, of the days singing hymns and performing dances in assembly to the school trips this movie expresses British childhood and nostalgia at its finest.
The first movie revolves around the nativity play, when a new teacher arrives after a heartbreak and lies about Hollywood coming to see their play. The kids are extremely talented and the man that makes the movie is the teaching assistant Mr Poppy with his childlike nature and the misery of the new teacher they make the perfect grumpy and sunshine duo.
The second movie revolves around a singing competition in Wales with a new teacher arrival and competition at stake with one of favourite actors David Tennant. With iconic original songs in both movies to sing and dance along to reminiscing on those simple primary days this movie is a must and is ideal for children too.
For the Comedic Nature - Elf (2003)
Personally, this is my favourite Will Ferrell movie. The movie revolves around one human sized elf, who goes on an adventure to New York City to find this birth family. After growing up in the north pole he finds it hard adjusting to the realities of human life and helps bring back the spirit of Christmas. His positive spirit and the family values of this movie make for the best family movie of choice.
For the Animated Lovers - Dr Seuss’ The Grinch (2018)
This movie is my favourite adaptation of the grinch as the animated version feels a lot less scary at the ripe age of 20 the other adaptations still scare me. The iconic story of the grinch revolves around a green creature that despises Christmas and wants to steal Christmas joy.
The movie teaches you the most about the true meaning of Christmas, of being with family and friends. The movie touches on meaningful messages of forgiveness and resentment with the grinch’s true distaste for Christmas stems from his loneliness, and in reality, he just wants to be included. This movie teaches so many important lessons and is such a cute and wholehearted movie.
Bonus - Arthur’s Christmas (2011)
For a more modern pick but slowly becoming a classic in the household is Arthur’s Christmas. The story involves Arthur the youngest son of Santa Claus on Christmas eve when one present has been left undelivered, he sacrifices his Christmas Eve to get the present to the child before Christmas morning. The movie teaches important values of everyone being important as well as having those funny moments.
That draws a conclusion to my guide to Christmas movies, I loved sharing my favourite Christmas movies. I hope you enjoyed reading and it gives you some inspiration to find that perfect Christmas movie for you to enjoy.
